A local student enrolled in the Gavilan College Aviation program and a San Jose State University student studying Aviation Professional Flight each received a $1,500 scholarship sponsored by the South County Airport Pilots Association (SCAPA), a non-profit San Martin organization dedicated to preserving the San Martin Airport and providing disaster airlift relief in times of emergency.

Jesse Zefe Rodarte of Hollister is enrolled in the FAA-certified Aviation Maintenance Technology program at the Gavilan College aviation facility at San Martin Airport. Jesse works as a student assistant in the Work Study program; has overcome numerous life challenges; and is embarking on a career as an aircraft technician, working toward certification as an Airframe & Powerplant (A&P) mechanic.

Ryan Richter lives in San Jose and majors in Aviation at San Jose State University. Ryan holds a private pilot certificate; works part-time as a line-service technical at Reid-Hillview Airport; has a high grade point average; and is striving to become a professional airline captain.

The SCAPA Scholarship program is an annual event made possible by the generous support of the individual members of SCAPA. SCAPA is a non-profit organization involving pilots and aviation enthusiasts with the mission to preserve the San Martin Airport, improve community relations, and enhance flying safety. SCAPA has an active Disaster Airlift Response Team (DART) also based at the San Martin Airport, working to provide local general aviation support capabilities for the South Santa Clara County community.
