Tuesday, April 11, 2017 - Dinner Meeting & Program: Mountain Flying to Truckee & South Lake Tahoe PDF Print E-mail
Written by Bette Gardner
Thursday, 16 March 2017
Join us for this monthly meeting of the South County Airport Pilots Association. We gather at 5:30 pm, serve dinner at 6:00 pm ($15 members, $20 non-members), hold a brief business meeting at 6:45 pm, and begin our speaker presentation at 7:00 pm. Guests are welcome!

Mountain Flying to Truckee & South Lake Tahoe

Lake Tahoe is a great destination, but pilots must be aware of terrain and weather effects in the mountainous terrain and unique factors when flying in and out of Truckee or South Lake Tahoe.

Our speaker will discuss considerations for flying in the mountains, including winds and weather, night operations, icing, density altitude and aeromedical factors. He will also focus on unique factors to consider when flying in and out of Truckee airport (KTRK) inlcuding non-towered airport operations, route planning, sharing the airspace with gliders, downdrafts to watch for, and detailed arrival and departure planning information. We will also be briefed about flying in and out of South Lake Tahoe (KTVL) airport.

This seminar is recommended anyone planning a flight to KTRK or KTVL, and it will be an excellent briefing for pilots who plan to join us on April 22 for a SCAPA fly-out to Truckee.

About our speaker:

Hardy Bullock is Director of Aviation and Community Services at the Truckee Tahoe Airport District. His responsibilities include safety, security, and efficiency of the airport as well as enhancement of the airport’s benefit and reduction of its annoyance to the community.

Hardy is a multi-engine, instrument-rated pilot with 2000 hours in various types of fixed-wing aircraft. He serves with distinction on the National Business Aircraft Association as the airports safety team leader. He is a certified member of the Association of Airport Executives; a planning commissioner; a community advisory team member; and board member of Big Brothers Big Sisters. Outside of work Hardy spends time with his wife of 20 years and two children ages 13 and 14.
