Rodney Pharis Recognized with Excellence in Volunteerism Award
By Don Schiller, Northrop Grumman Corporation

The Loma Prieta earthquake caused extensive damage and even delayed the World Series for 10 days - when it violently shook northern California on Oct. 17, 1989.  Centered near Santa Cruz, the 7.2-magnitude quake toppled buildings, buckled highways and left 67 people dead and another 3,757 injured.

As the scope of the damage became known, owners of more than 100 small and medium-sized aircraft took to the skies to shuttle emergency officials and more than 300,000 pounds of supplies to the hardest hit areas. Described as “general aviation Minutemen,” these pilots stepped up to fill the void left by the lack of an emergency transportation plan for the area.

SCAPA 2014 Holiday Party PDF Print E-mail

Save the Date! TheSouth County Airport Pilots Association Annual Holiday Party on Saturday, December 13th 2014. This year the party will be held at the spectacular historic Villa Mira Monte, located at 17860 Monterey Road, Morgan Hill, CA 95037.

Villa Mira Monte was completed by Hiram Morgan Hill in 1886 as a country getaway from the hustle and bustle of their home in turn of the century San Francisco, and their visits led to the modern town's name, as train conductors would announce "Morgan Hill's" when making special stops for the family and their guests.

Our Holiday Party is once again a pot luck, so to help us plan please RSVP via Meetup and let us know what dish you are planning on bringing.

See you there!!

DART Awarded Grants! PDF Print E-mail
Written by Mike Brogley
Sunday, 12 October 2014

In September, we had two rounds of great news relating to DART:

On September 16th SCAPA board member and Disaster Airlift Respose Team (DART) co-chairman Rod Pharis was informed that our DART program has been awarded a $10,000 grant from the AOPA Foundation Giving Back Program.

Then on September 24th Rod receved a phone call from his employer, Northrop Grumman Corporation, informing him that he had been selected to receive $5,000 from the Good Citizenship Grant Award program for his (and SCAPA's) participation in this community service project.

Both Rod and DART co-chairman Paul Marshall have been working diligently on obtaining various grants through different avenues over the past few years, and their efforts have finally paid off. The funds are earmarked for DART supplies and equipment lists that they've assembled over the past several years of grant applications to make our Disaster Airlift Response Team a viable entity.

Congratulations to Rod, Paul and the SCAPA board, and many thanks to the AOPA Foundation and Northrop Grumman Corporation for recognizing the value of DART to our local community!

Look for the next DART exercise after the first of the year.
