October 2015 Meeting: Pilot Deviation: It happened To Me, Now What? PDF Print E-mail
Written by Mike Brogley
Thursday, 17 September 2015

Join us for the October monthly gathering of the South County Airport Pilots Association on Tuesday, October 13th 2015. We gather at 5:30 pm, will be serving dinner at 6:00 pm ($15 members, $20 non-members, Guests Welcome!), hold a brief business meeting at 6:45 pm, and begin our speaker presentation at 7:00pm. Our topic this month, which has been approved for FAA Wings Credit, is:

Pilot Deviation: It Happened to Me, Now What? SCAPA Member Winfried Wilcke and FAASTeam Program Manager Jon Prater from the Oakland FSDO discuss “What happens next” after a pilot deviation

Make a mistake on the highway and you’ll end up with a speeding ticket, more formally known as a “moving violation.”  Make a mistake in the air and you’ll end up with a possible “pilot deviation” and if it goes far enough, an enforcement action by the FAA against your certificate.

SCAPA has invited in two speakers to share an important story regarding pilot deviations.  SCAPA member and pilot Winfried Wilcke and Oakland FSDO FAASTeam Program Manager Jon Prater will share the incident that caused them to meet, and will discuss “What happens next” after a pilot deviation has occurred.  We’ll hear from both perspectives and have an interactive discussion with the audience members about what everyone can learn from their experience.

July 2015 Meeting: ADS-B What It Is and Why You Need It! with Art Vartanian of Peninsula Avionics PDF Print E-mail
Written by Mike Brogley
Saturday, 13 June 2015

Join us for the July monthly gathering of the South County Airport Pilots Association on Tuesday, July 14th 2015. We gather at 5:30 pm, will be serving dinner at 6:00 pm ($15 members, $20 non-members, Guests Welcome!), hold a brief business meeting at 6:45 pm, and our speaker presentation kicks off at 7:00pm. Our topic this month is:

Automatic Dependent Surveillance–Broadcast with Art Vartanian of Peninsula Avionics

Automatic Dependent Surveillance–Broadcast (ADS–B) is a cooperative surveillance technology in which an aircraft determines its position via satellite navigation (GPS) and periodically broadcasts that position information, enabling tracking by air traffic control ground stations as a replacement for secondary radar. This position broadcast can also be received by other aircraft to provide situational awareness and allow self-separation. The ADB-B system also provides uplink data, and if you are properly equipped you can receive ground-based traffic and weather information, including weather radar images. But all the variations in equipment can be confusing - what do you need to install to take advantage of the full system, and how much will it cost? And with the 2020 deadline, what will you need to stay legal?

Update: The FAA has approved this talk for Wings Credit!

May 2015 Meeting: Aerial Photography & Drones PDF Print E-mail
Written by Mike Brogley
Thursday, 30 April 2015

Join us for the May monthly gathering of the South County Airport Pilots Association on Tuesday, May 12th 2015. We gather at 5:30 pm, will be serving dinner at 6:00 pm ($15 members, $20 non-members, Guests Welcome!), hold a brief business meeting at 6:45 pm, and our speaker presentation kicks off at 7:00pm. Our topic this month is:

Aerial Photography & Drones with Pat Belanger of The 111th Aerial Photography Squadron and the Professional Aerial Photographers Association, International (PAPA)

Now that drones have become the latest craze for techies, someone had to decide what they could be used for. Aerial photography and video seemed like a cool use, especially since the GoPro has gotten such a big response, and they marry up well. As a result there is now an over abundance of new "aerial photographers" operating remote controlled air vehicles in the public airspace. SCAPA Member and Master Aerial Photographer Pat Belanger will talk about how unmanned aerial vehicles have impacted his aerial photography business, and also cover what he has been doing for the past 21 years in aerial photography without the use of drones.
