Written by Mike Brogley
Saturday, 04 June 2016

One of the primary uses we put SCAPA membership and meeting income toward each year is our annual aviation scholarship program, and for 2016 we again funded three $1000 scholarships. After SCAPA member and scholarship lead Pat Belanger put out the word to the local aviation education community, the SCAPA board received eleven applications.

The selection process was tough this year due to the very high quality of the candidates, so the board members spent a lot of time going over all the applications, and discussing in detail the merits of each.

We gather at 5:30 pm, serve dinner at 6:00 pm ($15 members, $20 non-members, Guests Welcome!), hold a brief business meeting at 6:45 pm, and begin our speaker presentation at 7:00pm. Our topic this month is:

LightHawk: Volunteer Pilots Flying for Conservation with Greg Bedinger

Come learn about this network of skilled volunteer pilots who help to accelerate conservation of our natural resources through the powerful perspective of flight.

LightHawk is a nonprofit organization with more than 250 volunteer pilots contributing their time, experience and aircraft in support of conservation programs across much of the US and nearby areas in Mexico and Canada.

Working with conservation groups, LightHawk arranges flights that foster dialogue and promote informed decision-making among people involved or influential in conservation causes and initiatives.

Our speaker will present an informative slide show highlighting LightHawk missions in California and other regions. We will learn what it takes to become a LightHawk volunteer pilot, and we will have an opportunity to ask questions and meet LightHawk staff.

May 2016 meeting: Medical Certification for Pilots, with Tiffany Davies, MD, AME PDF Print E-mail
Written by Mike Brogley
Wednesday, 20 April 2016

Join us for the May meeting of the South County Airport Pilots Association on Tuesday, May 10th, 2016. We gather at 5:30 pm, serve dinner at 6:00 pm ($15 members, $20 non-members, Guests Welcome!), hold a brief business meeting at 6:45 pm, and begin our speaker presentation at 7:00pm. The meeting has been approved for WINGS credit by the FAA! Our topic this month is:

Medical Certification for pilots with Tiffany Davies, MD, AME

Pilots must meet medical standards based on the piloting privileges that they wish to excercise. Sport pilots can use their driver’s license as their medical certificate, but private pilots must regularly get a flight physical from an AME, (Aviation Medical Examiner), for the medical certification necessary to operate as Pilot in Command.

Requirements may be changing with legislation now under consideration in Congress…but not yet!  And regardless of potential changes, every pilot must consider his/her fitness for flight.

Our speaker is an AME with diverse experience and an interest in keeping pilots healthy. She will present information about FAA requirements and changes now under consideration in Congress, and she will advise us about common medical problems that may affect our fitness for flight.
