Members will have noticed that the windsock at the south end of the E16 ruway has finally been replaced.

Your SCAPA board and the Santa Clara County Airports team worked hard to leverage the expertise of our membership to find a solution to the replacement issues, and together we succeeded.

April 12, 2016 Meeting: Skydiving at E16 - Safe Practices for Pilots PDF Print E-mail

Join us for the April meeting of the South County Airport Pilots Association on Tuesday, April 12th, 2016. We gather at 5:30 pm, serve dinner at 6:00 pm ($15 members, $20 non-members, Guests Welcome!), hold a brief business meeting at 6:45 pm, and begin our speaker presentation at 7:00pm. Our topic this month is:

Skydiving at E16: Safe Practices for Pilots with Andy Simmons, owner of San Jose Skydiving Center.

Skydiving has come to San Martin airport (E16)!

Authorized by both the FAA and the County of Santa Clara, an operator, San Jose Skydiving Center, opened for business in February. Come to this presentation to learn about the operations and safe practices for sharing the airspace. 

Our speaker is SCAPA member Andy Simmons, owner and operator of the new San Jose Skydiving Center at E16. Andy will share practical information about the jump zone, the flight area, radio calls, and traffic avoidance including the role of the NorCal TRACON. He will also briefly cover the history of skydiving and speak about operations at the Center: the pilots, instructors, jumpers and the equipment they use.

Come learn about the fascinating history of Almaden Air Force Station on Mount Umunhum in the Santa Cruz Mountains. The radar station was in operation during the Cold War, between 1958 and 1980, when it was part of the nationwide SAGE computer network. (A computer network in the 1960s? Yes!)

Airplane operators have authority to do preventive maintenance on certificated aircraft. This can offset some of the high cost of airplane maintenance, and it can be personally satisfying and educational for those who are willing and able. But just what is considered preventive maintenance in the eyes of the regulator? Robert Borregard, IA/A&P will address what you can legally do without an A&P’s supervision, the requirements you must follow, and when you should get professional advice. He will also offer tips on troubleshooting engine problems and remedies that can save money and time.
