Saturday, Oct. 1, 2016 was our best ever DART exercise. 45 attendees, good blending of SCAPA pilots, CERT volunteers, cities of Gilroy and Morgan Hill emergency managers, pilots flying in from other airports including two pilot associations who are starting their own DARTs and the Watsonville WEACT, the editor of the Gilroy Dispatch, and a photographer from the Morgan Hill Times. See the nice posting by Dick Filson, a pilot from Stockton who participated for his second year, who happens to be my brother-in-law who I fly to Oshkosh with every summer.

Corl Leach -- "CalPilots & Topics for California’s General Aviation Community"

With more than 200 local and regional aviation-interested organizations in the state, how do we all communicate with each other? The answer is simple: collaborate through the existing state-level organization created to preserve, protect, and promote California’s general aviation community and airports.

We will learn about issues facing general aviation from our speaker, the president of CalPilots. He will explain how the “Three Tiers of Aviation Advocacy” apply directly to us. This is an opportunity to get up to date on the topics that are engaging CalPilots and to share your own concerns and ideas. This part of the evening will be a conversation, not a lecture!

DART Exercise Saturday, Oct. 1, 2016 PDF Print E-mail

Dear SCAPA Members:

This year’s Disaster Airlift Response Team (DART) exercise is coming up on October 1. Please mark it on your calendars and let Paul Marshall know if you can participate. Paul will be doing the event planning beforehand and Rod Pharis will be the Operations Director on the day of the event. We’ll keep the format similar to last year’s exercise – We assume a large earthquake has isolated Gilroy, San Martin, and Morgan Hill from the rest of the state – surface transportation has been cut at overpasses south of Gilroy and north of Morgan Hill, and we need the airport to help connect us to the outside world.

We will conduct a number of operations that model things we can do to help the community such as evacuating families to relatives elsewhere in Northern California, flying emergency workers into the area or to their jobs in neighboring communities, and flying in emergency food rations from outside locations.

Sunday, 28 August 2016

Join us for the September meeting of the South County Airport Pilots Association on Tuesday, September 13th, 2016. We gather at 5:30 pm, serve dinner at 6:00 pm ($15 members, $20 non-members, Guests Welcome!), hold a brief business meeting at 6:45 pm, and begin our speaker presentation at 7:00pm. The meeting has been approved for WINGS credit by the FAA! Our topic this month is:

Flying the Grand Canyon SFRA with Dave Kramer

The Grand Canyon is a world renowned tourist destination. Wouldn't it be fun to see the majestic beauty of the Grand Canyon from above? Flying in the area surrounding the Grand Canyon offers pilots a unique opportunity to improve their skills, due to the Special Flight Rules Area designated around the park. The rules help separate visitors on the ground from aircraft noise, and help protect GA pilots from commercial air tours. Dave Kramer will review the SFRA and provide suggestions for making your flight over the Grand Canyon safe and enjoyable.

The Santa Clara County Airports Department has a new web form for requesting airport maintenance or reporting issues at E16 or RHV - just click on this link, fill out and submit the web form, and the issue you've reported will be automatically transmitted into the Airports Department staff's work queue. Airports head honcho Eric Peterson says using this form will make it easier for the Airports team to track issues and make sure they get resolved.
