Friday, 24 June 2016

Join us for the July meeting of the South County Airport Pilots Association on Tuesday, July 12th, 2016. We gather at 5:30 pm, serve dinner at 6:00 pm ($15 members, $20 non-members, Guests Welcome!), hold a brief business meeting at 6:45 pm, and begin our speaker presentation at 7:00pm. The meeting has been approved for WINGS credit by the FAA! Our topic this month is:

Best Practices in NORCAL Airspace with Mark Thompson and Steve Whorton

Most pilots talk on the radio with NORCAL, which handles air traffic in the greater Bay Area and Sacramento, for flight following and IFR services.

Ever wonder where they are, what they do and how they do it? Our speaker will share information from the inside about NORCAL operations and how to make the most of services available to pilots with emphasis on safe VFR practices. We will also hear about the coming use of ADS-B for traffic visibility and management.

Bring your questions! We will get Q&A time with two air traffic controllers who serve our region.

Jose Andres Rocha, a local aviation student who in 2014 was a recipient of a $1,000 SCAPA Scholarship, recently sent us the following message:

"I want to share with you and SCAPA that I graduated from USAFA Preparatory last week on 5/24/2016. The best part is that I received an Appointment to USAFA Class of 2020. Consequently on 6/29/2016 I will be heading back to Colorado Springs to the United States Air Force Academy.

Thank you, Jose Andres Rocha."

Congratulations, Jose, and thank you for sharing your success story!

2016 Scholarships Awarded at May Meeting PDF Print E-mail

One of the primary uses we put SCAPA membership and meeting income toward each year is our annual aviation scholarship program, and for 2016 we again funded three $1000 scholarships. After SCAPA member and scholarship lead Pat Belanger put out the word to the local aviation education community, the SCAPA board received eleven applications.

The selection process was tough this year due to the very high quality of the candidates, so the board members spent a lot of time going over all the applications, and discussing in detail the merits of each.
