    South County Pilots

Join us for the monthly gathering of the South County Airport Pilots Association. We start with a social hour at 5 PM, dinner ($15) at 6, a business meeting at 6:45, and this speaker presentation to follow at 7:

I Can't Do That To My Airplane, or Can I?

--Approved by FAASafety for WINGS credit--

Preventive maintenance accomplished by a pilot is prescribed by the Federal Aviation Regulations, but just what is preventive maintenance in the eyes of the regulator and what qualifications and records are required to remain legal and keep your aircraft airworthy? You will know after attending this seminar.

    About our speaker:

Shawn Skaggs has been an Aviation Safety Inspector (ASI) at the SJC FSDO for the past 19 years. He has been a Principal Inspector on every type of organizational certificate held or issued from the FSDO to include Part 91, 121, 125, 135, 137, 141, and 145 operations.

Mr. Skaggs is currently assigned as the FAA Safety Team Program Manager for the SJC FSDO District. He holds Private Pilot SEL and Airframe & Powerplant Mechanic certificates.

Message from the President

Hello fellow SCAPA members,

It was great to see many of you at our Christmas party in early December. It sure would be great to see more of you at our monthly meetings! The November and January meeting turnouts were very low and I am hoping it is just due to holiday/vacation issues. The SCAPA board is open to any and all ideas to make our monthly meetings more appealing, please feel free to contact me at: This e-mail address is being protected from spam bots, you need JavaScript enabled to view it for suggestions.

We have a new dinner venue where each board member is taking a turn at either preparing something fun, or bringing in something fun from a local restaurant. Pat has been our chef for two great years now and we decided to help him out! He will get a turn also.

The SCAPA board has been working in greater conjunction with the Wings of History group lately. Due to work that Frank Giancola did last year for one of their projects, and to Pat, Tom and myself working closely with the WOH president Todd Minier, we have been granted free rent for this year and a reduced rent to $600/year for the future. This will allow us to hold our dinner price at $15. We are also going to participate in the Young Eagles event this May so it would be great to get some volunteers from you folks. We have reviewed the WOH insurance policy and as they will add us on as additional insured, we feel we are adequately covered as volunteers for the event. We will announce our level of participation after we meet with the WOH group in the next few weeks.

With your help, it may be possible to get reduced or even free rent in the future for SCAPA. The Wings of History is in need of upgrading the building to ADA standards and at the same time, improving the grounds and remodeling the interior. Their initial estimate is around $20k so they are hoping that SCAPA members can volunteer with some of this work. Also, we are working on sponsorship/advertising ideas that would help both SCAPA and WOH and get your company name out there for return. One idea that has come out on top is allowing booths or tables to promote your business at the May event for an affordable fee. There are 300-400 kids showing up with mostly two parents so the impact is fairly broad. Also, many more visitors come to look at the displays. We are open to suggestions on other sponsorship ideas so please feel free to contact us with ideas.

Our next monthly meeting is February 7th and our speaker will be Shaun Skaggs, an FSDO inspector on maintenance and what we can do ourselves to save $$ on maintaining our own planes. It will be a wings event for credit towards the wings program. Paul Marshall will be our hospitality host for food.

It is dues time so please send a check for $30 (and feel free to add an additional $30 scholarship donation!) to our PO box:

You can also pay your dues online southcountypilots.org by signing in and clicking on the Paypal button.
Thanks and hope to see you at the February 7th meeting,

Safe flights and clear skies,
