The next monthly SCAPA meeting is on Tuesday, June 11th 2013 at the Wings of History Museum. We gather at 5:30 pm, serve dinner at 6, hold a business meeting at 6:45, and our speaker presentation kicks off at 7pm.
This month's presentation topic is The Civil Air Patrol, How Search and Rescue Works, and What It’s Like To Be A CAP Pilot from two members of CAP Squadron 80 based at Reid-Hillview Airport, CAP Major Coby Sena and CAP Major John Lewis.
Founded in 1941 just days before the attack on Pearl Harbor, the Civil Air Patrol started out protecting America's shores against enemy submarine attack. After the war, the volunteer organization's role changed to search and rescue. CAP still performs 95% of all inland search and rescue for missing aircraft, and over the years it has broadened its service role.
During all CAP missions, safety plays a major role. We will learn how CAP maintains a culture of safety, and what you, as pilots, can do to increase your own safety, both in everyday situations and in emergencies.
Dinner is $15 for SCAPA members, $20 for non-members. For those who have not yet done so, you can also pay your 2013 annual SCAPA membership dues of $30 when you pay for dinner. If you're not sure if you've paid your 2013 dues - we have a list and will be happy to look you up!

The Southern Alps of New Zealand present some of the most dramatic landscapes on the planet, with glacier-capped peaks only 15 miles from the Tasman Sea, temperate rain forests on the windward side of the South Island and semi-arid grasslands on the leeward side. The Southern Alps are also a spectacular place to fly sailplanes, offering motor-less flights stretching hundreds of miles over and among those same glacier-capped peaks. When the wind blows hard, mountain wave sets up and soaring flights to 20,000 foot altitude and beyond are common.
This presentation is based on one pilot's experience at GlideOmarama.com, a mountain-soaring school in Omarama, New Zealand. We'll see videos of glider flights to Milford Sound and Mount Cook, 3-D flight traces showing the paths of the flights, and details on how glider pilots use thermal, wave and ridge lift to fly long distances at high altitudes.
**UPDATE** This program has been approved by the FAA for WINGS program credit - you can preregister here!
